Wanted – more apprentices because of scheme success

A scheme to encourage employers to take on apprentices and give them a step up onto the employment ladder has proved so successful that the organisers now need more young people to enrol for apprenticeships.

Plymouth-based Academy of Training launched their Step Up 2 Success (SU2S) programme earlier this month. The scheme gives employers the chance to try an apprentice for 18 weeks without any financial implication, not even the weekly apprentice wage of £95.

Apprentices are carefully matched to the employer’s profile and receive training for one day per week at Academy, as well as mentor support in the workplace.

Employers have reacted enthusiastically to the scheme and have snapped up all the available apprentices on Academy’s books. Operations manager Andrew Parkin says they now urgently need more young people to come forward.

“The programme is really good for young people as well as employers,” he said. “It offers a lifeline to young people who are being hit hard by the recession and missing out on the chance to develop skills expected by employers, like customer service or health and safety. Without these skills or even the chance to experience a working environment, young people stand little chance of finding a job and the future skills gap will get wider.

“We now need more young people, particularly those interested in a career in childcare or retail, and we even have one for someone who is interested in snowboarding.”
