Academy of Training backs government plans to help young people into work

Academy of Training is backing a call by Prime Minister Gordon Brown for employers to do more in ensuring that young people do not join ‘the ranks of the long-term unemployed’.

Mr Brown will launch his Backing Young Britain initiative today (Weds) in which he will ask businesses to consider young people for a job through a work trial.

Christine Jeffery, managing director of Academy of Training, said employers can take advantage of really good deals to take on young people. “Apprenticeships mean a young person can be trained to suit the company’s needs, with all the training paid for and at a really affordable wage of only £95 a week.

“We have a number of schemes ourselves which can add value to this for an employer and which can give a business the opportunity of gaining an economic advantage.

“We seem to be gradually coming out of the recession, so now is the time to look for future growth and what could be better than taking on a young person now and training him or her to grow with your business?

“We are looking forward to seeing what Mr Brown’s initiative will detail for businesses, and we hope it will enable more companies to step up to the mark and help the young people of today grow into the skilled workforce of tomorrow.”
