Academy managing director elected to ALP board
23 November 2009
Chris Jeffery, the managing director of Plymouth-based Academy of Training, has been elected to the board of the Association of Learning Providers (ALP).
The Association is recognised as the voice of independent learning providers throughout England. ALP’s members deliver most of the Apprenticeship training and the majority of Train to Gain provision in England. Membership is open to any training provider committed to quality work-based learning (WBL) and includes over 60 Further Education colleges.
Mrs Jeffery, who is also on the council of LSIS, the Learning and Skills Improvement Service, is one of four new directors of ALP. She was elected from a field of eleven candidates.
“It’s a great honour to be elected to the ALP board,” she said. “Increasing the skills of the nation’s workforce is a priority for all the political parties, and ALP works closely with policy makers to help influence government strategy.
“At Academy we are committed to helping young people onto the employment ladder, and I will make sure that government is aware of the particular challenges that young people face in this part of the country.”
Academy of Training was established 25 years ago in Tavistock to provide vocational training. The company moved to Plymouth in 2000 and into its present premises in Exeter Street in 2001, and also has offices in Budshead Road, Crownhill. The company provides workplace learning and apprenticeship training in a number of fields.
This year Academy launched its popular Step Up 2 Success programme to encourage employers to take on an apprentice by subsidising the costs for the first 18 weeks.
