National Minimum Wage

An employer must pay their workers a minimum amount as defined by law. This is called the National Minimum wage.

This came into force in April 1999 and as of 1st October 2008 the new rates are:
• £4.77 for workers aged 18-21yrs inclusive
• £5.73 for workers aged 22+
• £3.53 for people under age of 18 who are no longer of compulsory school age

 

Note:

• Apprentices under the age of 19 are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage.
• Apprentices who are 19 or over and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage.
