
Hairdressing
QUALIFICATION: City and Guilds NVQ Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.
DURATION: The anticipated duration of this course is generally 12 months for Level 1, and 15 - 18 for Level 2 and Level 3
LEVEL 1
AIM OF COURSE LEVEL 1: To develop foundation skills and knowledge to take on an effective role as a hairdressing junior/assistant.
ENTRY AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS LEVEL 1:
There are no formal requirements for this course but enthusiasm and good presentation skills are expected.
Learners are expected to possess good communications skills.
Learners should be literate and numerate and demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN LEVEL 1:
Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
Assist with salon reception duties
Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
Shampoo and condition the hair
Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
Assist with perming and colouring services
DELIVERY LEVEL 1:
On and off the job training
ASSESSMENT LEVEL 1:
Assessment is by observation of the learner on the job, by portfolio monitoring and by both oral and written questioning. There is no examination at the end of course.
There will be at least one day work experience per week and one day in college.
LEVEL 2
AIM OF COURSE LEVEL 2: To equip the learner with the necessary knowledge and practical skills required to work independently in a salon; to encourage learners to use their initiative within a salon environment
ENTRY AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS LEVEL 2:
There are no formal requirements for this course and all learners are subject to an initial assessment and skills scan.
Learners are expected to possess good communications skills.
Learners should be literate and numerate and demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team.
A work placement is required (which the Academy of Training will help to secure) and learners will be supported by their employer.
The employer should allow you to attend all classroom-based activities and learning sessions provided by the Academy. These provide the opportunity to develop knowledge-based skills.
The employer will be actively involved with planning the ongoing training and support necessary for the learner to achieve the qualification.
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN LEVEL 2:
To advise and consult with clients accurately
How to shampoo and condition the scalp
Basic cutting techniques
Styling techniques
To change hair colour
The importance of Salon reception and assessment
DELIVERY LEVEL 2:
Flexible teaching and learning programmes designed to suit individual and business needs
On and Off the job training and assessment
ASSESSMENT LEVEL 2:
Assessment is by observation of the learner on the job, by portfolio monitoring and by both oral and written questioning. There is no examination at the end of course.
LEVEL 3
AIM OF COURSE LEVEL 3: To develop basic and advanced skills
To encourage technical proficiency
ENTRY AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS LEVEL 3:
Candidates must hold NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing.
Learners are expected to possess good communications skills.
Learners should be literate and numerate and demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team.
A work placement is required and learners will be supported by their employer.
It is a requirement that learners will attend evening classes as directed.
The learner must be self-motivated.

Use a combination of cutting techniques
To style and dress hair
Colouring using a variety of techniques
Provide colour correction
To provide Indian Head Massage
To provide hair extension
